Because of its location near the front, Staden was a hotbed of espionage. During the war, the convent in Staden served as a field hospital, and was the first place of employment of Martha Cnockaert, one of the most well-known spies of WWI. After the war, her book I Was a Spy was made into a film, and received international attention.
