German troops occupied Bruges between 14 October 1914 and 19 October 1918. All that time, the Burg remained the city's administrative centre.
The town hall retained its function. The Ostkommandatur and Feldpolizei took up residence in the Brugse Vrije, from where they adopted all kinds of decrees and regulations and arranged the daily life of the occupied people of Bruges. Admiral Ludwig von Schröder, who resided in the Governor's palace, was the military leader of the Marinegebiet and the northern, occupied part of West Flanders.
During his stay in Bruges, Prince Adalbert of Prussia, third son of Emperor Wilhelm, took up residence where now the Crowne Plaza Hotel is located. By his actions, three people who were sentenced to death saw their sentences commuted to life imprisonment.
The Blood Chapel was closed during the war, protected, as it was, by solid oak armour.
