Even though Bruges was far from the Yser Front, the British started bombing it from 1917, with the Allies' main target being the port of Zeebrugge, the submarine base and other military installations.
Unfortunately, the bombs were also dropped on the historic city centre. In the night of 14 to 15 May 1918, St Walburga Church was badly damaged. Photos of the destroyed left aisle appeared in German magazines. “Walburga-Kirche in Brügge, durch engl. Fliegerbomben schwer beschädigt”, wrote the journalists. In their reports, they underlined that this was down to a British air strike, with the intention of hitting civilian targets in Bruges. The German propaganda machine was in full swing …
