The Bruges-Zeebrugge Canal formed part of the German Marinegebiet. In the hinterland, particularly Lissewege was of great strategic importance.
When they occupied the ports of Bruges, Zeebrugge and Ostend, the Germans planned to build bases for sea planes. After all, those were ideal to keep an eye on the entire coastline and the Allied coastal forces. As early as in December 1914, they built Seeflugstation Zeebrügge, later known as Seeflugstation Flandern I.
In 1916, the Flugpark in Lissewege was fully operational. Damaged aircraft were brought on steam trains. In the large repair and revision hangars, they were made ready for use.
Later on, the Flugpark moved to the airport of Koolkerke.
