Alexander Calder’s ‘The Whirling Ear’ was originally installed in a pool at the entrance to the American Pavilion during the 1958 World Expo, which has since disappeared. Forgotten in the aftermath of the Expo, it was transferred to the basement of the Museum of Modern Art before reappearing at Mont des Arts. Although many remnants of the Brussels World Expos have disappeared over time, some, like this one, have been given a new lease of life elsewhere in the capital, throughout Belgium and even beyond our borders.
