St. Martin's Church

Description

The Romanesque-style church was probably founded in the 7th century by Saint Amandus and dedicated to Saint Martin. In texts there is already mention of a church in 1025, presumably a single-aisled hall church. During the iconoclasm, the church was ugly battered. Due to a shortage of money, it took until 1654 before it was restored. During this restoration around 1650, the church was given a Gothic appearance. In 1803, a first secular priest was appointed. Until 1803 the parish was served by fathers of the St. Peter's Abbey of Ghent or of the Abbey of Drongen. From 1831 the church was enlarged at the expense of the inhabitants of Baarle. A complete restoration of the church was carried out in the course of 1994. Since 2003, a beautifully painted Stations of the Cross by the Latem artist Evarist De Buck (1892-1974) can be admired in the aisles. The thirteen paintings are a masterpiece of Flemish religious art from the beginning of the last century. The work includes 14 canvases, 13 of which are original in the church. The eleventh station 'The Crucifixion of Christ' is to be inexplicable
reasons disappeared without a trace. To date, it has not been recovered. There is a replica of it in the church. The church is no longer used for worship.
