This picnic area is located on a reconstruction of the Wire of Death. The Wire of Death was built by the Germans during the First World War. In that period, the Germans had to watch with sorrow that there was a lot of smuggling of goods and people back and forth across the Dutch-Belgian border. A high-voltage barbed wire fence along the entire Belgian-Dutch border should stop the people. Soon smugglers had developed wooden hinged windows to sneak through the barbed wire fence. However, many have lost their lives there.
Nearby there is also an information panel with information about hiking in the valley of the Merkske.
The picnic area has been set up as part of the Zondereigen land consolidation project.
