The church building is located in the center of Westerlo near the Grote Markt and is surrounded by the cemetery. Despite a long building history and different use of materials, St. Lambert's Church is a homogeneous Gothic/neo-Gothic cruciform basilica. The choir and transept date from 1416, the upper central nave from around 1525-1540 and around 1540 the church was probably extended with side aisles. The former tower had a curiously twisted spire. The current appearance was determined by the thorough restoration in the period 1890-1904 by P. Langerock. Here, too, a lot of iron sandstone was used and the church is an example of Demer Gothic.
