The giant, lonely poplar in the meadow is a mystery. Presumably it's an old poplar variety, but we're not sure which one it would be. The broad trunk base, straight trunk and deeply grooved bark are remarkable. For such an old tree, it is also striking that it stands alone, not in a forest context or as a plot demarcation. Perhaps this was chosen for aesthetic reasons? Or maybe he had to provide shade to the cattle in the pasture? What do you think?
