On summer days you imagine yourself - with some imagination - in a Tuscan landscape with swaying cornfields with in the open landscape this chapel on a hill, surrounded by four stately poplars. Popularly, everyone speaks of "Steppe's chapel", referring to the accompanying grand but now dilapidated and desolate 'Court of Steppe' on the Vogelzangstraat. Seen from here, it hides behind tall trees in the middle of fields and meadows. The location of this beautiful chapel, from where we have a unique view over the four cardinal points, gives us a somewhat beautiful view of the hamlet of Lebeke with the modern St. Anthony Van Padua Church. The four swaying poplars that once guarded the chapel had to be replaced by new ones after a storm blew one of the trees on the chapel's turret. Inside is a typical Lourdes grotto where Bernadette and Our Lady have been in each other's pious company since time immemorial. Founded by the Nederhasselt community in 1875 as a thank you for healings obtained during a period when cholera ravaged the region, the restored chapel is now owned by the city of Ninove.
