Memorial stone Blacksmith Lambrecht

On the square to the left of the church is a memorial stone for Frans Lambrecht. In fact, it was his funerary monument, coming from the cleared cemetery at the Ninoofse abbey church. It states: 'Tribute of the Christian Democrats to their leader SMID LAMBRECHT - living administrator of the free clock - 1858 - 1906'. Blacksmith Lambrecht was also scornfully called the cold blacksmith: due to lack of work, it was not worth lighting his blacksmith's fire. After all, the pastor had forbidden the parishioners to be customers of Lambrecht because he sided with his friend Emiel, the schoolmaster, during the school struggle of 1879. The church then forbade Catholic teachers to teach in "schools without God" (state education) but Emiel refused to resign. The tormented farrier had had enough of the conservatives and the clergy and joined the Daensists, in the Dender region "De Roelanders", so named after their magazine "Klokke Roeland". He became one of the most popular leaders of Adolf Daens' Christian People's Party but died at the age of just 48. Since 1981, the name Smid Lambrechtstraat has been a reminder of this prominent Daensist.
