Line 42 is a Belgian railway line between Rivage and Gouvy. The railway is mainly used for international traffic between Liège and Luxembourg.
The section of the railway between Rivage and Trois-Ponts was not technically easy to build. The railway had to follow the winding valley of the Amblève, which is often characterized by steep walls. Several tunnels were built between Remouchamps and Trois-Ponts. The 618-metre-long Remouchamps tunnel cuts off a river meander, shortening the route by almost three kilometres. Also at Stoumont, where the valley is relatively narrow, three tunnels had to be built: those of Targnon (279 m, under the hamlet of the same name), Xhierfomont (127 m) and Cheneux (250 m). The Rivage - Stoumont section was opened on 20 January 1885, and on 1 July 1890 the connection was made between Stoumont and Trois-Ponts.
The railway was initially built on single track, only in the First World War the Rivage - Vielsalm section was brought to double track by the German occupiers.
The rest of the railway did not become double track until around 1922.
