In the densely populated Borgerhout, there was (and still is) great need for open space and green areas. At the end of the 1970s, it was decided to demolish an entire block to create the only park that Old-Bourgerhout has.
The park was named after the square that already existed and the street that connects it to Turnhoutsebaan. Paul Kruger was the leader of the Boer Wars at the end of the 19th century when South African colonists of Dutch descent fought against troops from the United Kingdom that were trying to gain control over the colony. In late 19th century Flanders, there was great admiration for this 'David' who stood up against the Goliath of the largest empire in the world. The apartheid politics of the 20th century have greatly cooled our sympathy for the South African "Boers." Therefore, the name of Krugerpark is also being questioned today.
The park was inaugurated in 1982. It is triangular and about one hectare in size. Let your children play here for a while… they will surely find it fantastic, and in the meantime, you can enjoy a pint on the terrace of Bar Leon or grab a portion of fries at Sam on the corner with Tabernakelstraat.
