At the end of the 18th century, the hamlet of Elsleuken was home to a number of wealthier residents, such as Jan Wellens of the Drie Snellen. He owned one horse and six cows. The house is mentioned as early as 1731 under the name of the '3 snellen' . In 1802 it was thoroughly rebuilt by farmer Jan Ant(oon) Wellens and Anna Maria Crets. They had bought the house in 1796. A plaque bears their initials: IAW+AEC.
Along the major thoroughfares, such as the Mechelen track, there were several inns: In addition to 'De Snelle', there were also 'Den Eik' in Averbode, 'De Heibloem' in the Gijmel, and 'De Liter' in Ourodenberg in our immediate vicinity.
A 'quick' was a small cup that could be drunk in one gulp.
