The Zonnebos is better known locally as the 'Fleinus', which comes from 'Flines'. In the 13th century, this forest belonged to the Abbey of Flines.
This forest is approx. 5 ha in size and is located on a sand ridge, on which the Graafjansdijk was also built in the 14th century. On this sandy soil, especially pines or spruces were planted. At the end of the Second World War, many trees were cut down here to make 'Rommelasperges'. They were mainly planted at an angle in the fields on the coast in Zeeuws-Vlaanderen so that enemy aircraft could not land in open areas.
A few decades ago, the forest was mainly used as a play forest for local youth associations. Afterwards it came into the hands of a pheasant farm, as a result of which a lot of natural wealth was lost. Since 2018 it has been owned by Natuurpunt, who want to restore the forest.
