Saint Veroonmars

Here you will see a sign indicating that the Sint-Veroonwandeling or Sint-Veroonmars passes here. You can make this walk for a whole year via this signage, but the time to do this is at Easter. Every year, on Easter Monday, the Soldier Procession passes through Lembeek and the surrounding municipalities. This centuries-old Sint-Verconmars is the only military procession in Flanders that can claim an age-old existence. Central to the procession is the silver shrine containing the remains of Saint Veroon, patron saint of the municipality. The walk also crosses the language border.

Saint Veroon is revered because he would have driven the plague away in the region.

According to legend, Veronus was a great-grandson of Charlemagne. He left the family home at the age of 15, because he did not want to get married, and ended up in Lembeek. Here he settled and enlisted as a servant on a tenant farm.

When he once smashed a stick into the ground, water immediately bubbled out of the ground. He told his twin sister, Saint Verona, where he would have been buried after his death. A fallen tree would show her the way. After his death, as he had foreseen, it happened.
