The abbey of Tussenbeek, a Norbertine monastery, owned many lands in the area between 1148 and 1783. As the name suggests, the current nature reserve Nonnenbos also belonged to the monastery of Tussenbeek. The area contains many remnants of old ponds. The subsoil in many parts of the forest is moist and marshy, making it an ideal habitat for many animals and plants.
