The market was once a gift from the countesses Johanna and Margaretha, with the condition that it should remain forever undeveloped and undivided. With an area of 3.19 ha, there is plenty of room for meetings and events. Every Thursday morning, the Thursday market takes place, since 1513! Every first weekend of September, the Peace Festival is held here, an outdoor event where up to 60 hot air balloons in the craziest shapes and colors take off.
Tip! The Grote Markt of Sint-Niklaas is one of the few places in the world where hot air balloons are allowed to take off in the middle of the city center.
