Right next to the church, you will find four special buildings in a row.
The Old Parish House, a baroque building, was constructed in 1663-1664 according to a design by, among others, Lucas Faydherbe. The staircase in rococo style dates from 1776. The Saint Nicholas statue was added to the gable in 1867. It is the work of Frans van Haevermaet, who also created the Virgin Mary statue at the Our Lady Church.
Initially, the building served as the seat of the Vierschaar before it functioned as the town hall until 1844. Subsequently, the Commercial Court and the Labor Court sat here.
Currently, the tourism office of Sint-Niklaas is housed here, until the end of the year. From then on, you can get all the information about the city and the surrounding area in the brand-new town hall wing.
Be sure to stop by. In the staircase hall, you can admire the impressive Reynaert Tower which depicts all the animals from the well-known Reynaert story.
To the right of this building, you will find the Cipierage. Here, as the name suggests, was once located the prison of the Land of Waas.
Lucas Faid’herbe designed the building in 1661-1662 in a sober baroque style. Where the café is now, the jailers of the Land of Waas used to gather.
Can you identify the coat of arms on the façade?
Further along, you will find the old neo-Renaissance post office and the Landhuis. The Landhuis was once built as a meeting room for the main office of the Land of Waas. Soon a new, sweet breeze will blow through this historic building.
