Archaeological Park de Rieten

The Rieten Archaeological Park is an archaeological park in the Belgian village of Wijshagen. Here, three elite tombs, two simple tombs, a Roman sanctuary and a more recent burial ground with forty-four graves were uncovered.
On July 20, 1986, D. Emery, captain of the U.S. Air Force at Kleine-Brogel Air Base, walked over the site with a metal detector. He discovered a ribbed bronze bucket filled with cremation remains, bronze ornaments, the handle of an iron bucket, an iron horse bit, and a number of smaller iron objects. The site was located at the end of an excavation trench where a team, led by archaeologists Luc Van Impe and Guido Creemers, had been active since 1984. A passer-by noticed the find and notified the team. The scientists were given access to the finds.
