The street was given this name at the time of the construction and establishment of the Lens-Diamond-industries factory. The arrival of that factory marked the end of the era of independent diamond polishers. Many experienced diamond workers went to work in the LDI factory, part of De Beers, the largest player in the world of diamonds.
At the time, the factory employed about 300 people, and the closure was announced in February 2002. 255 workers lost their jobs, diamond processing as a profession was exported to low-wage countries.
The site where the former factory used to be is now home to a number of smaller wholesale businesses.
