Watermill of Zevenborren

The mill of Zevenborren was a grain water mill built in 1402. It was owned by the priory of Zevenborren through a donation from Duchess Joanna of Brabant.

Standing with one's back to the Mill Pond, one sees in the middle the miller’s house (white facade with green shutters) with a barn far left and next to it a bakery. These buildings date from the middle of the 19th century. Far right, one can see a mansion from the late 19th century that also later served as a restaurant. Note the significant drop in the terrain: the back of the miller's house and the mansion have one more floor at the back than at the front.

The waterwheel was replaced by a turbine after World War II, which has never worked properly due to the leaf fall from the surrounding trees.

The watermill was protected as a monument in 1981. Currently, the mill has been renovated into a residence and is not open to visitors. The complete milling installation has been preserved and is in reasonable condition. The flow rate is very low: about 10l/sec, but the drop is 6m 99. Thanks to the mill pond, a higher flow rate could be obtained: at night the water was raised to be released during the day.
