Basel was nominated as one of the East Flemish candidates in the election for 'most beautiful village in Flanders'. This municipality of about 5,000 inhabitants is an exceptionally beautiful pearl in the Wase landscape. It has a rich and visible history as one of the oldest settlements in the Waasland region. The current 14th century Gothic St. Peter's Church was already a Romanesque place of worship before 964.
