The royal domain of Laeken is a huge green space with grassy fields, bushes, and ponds. It is an important part of the ecological corridor that the canal represents. Great blue herons come here to build their nests and catch fish. The heron colony in the royal domain is the largest in the Brussels Region. On the sturdy branches of large trees, there are about 200 nests in total, some of which are visible from the canal. The great blue heron is a large wader (84 to 102 cm long), with a predominantly gray plumage.
