The Marais Wiels

Chase away the natural, it comes back sometimes by itself. Take the site now called Marais Wiels. Drained at the end of the 19th century to build the brewery of the Wielemans brothers, this vast marshy land was then left abandoned after the cessation of brewing activities. In 2008, during work that led to the piercing of an impermeable layer, a body of water reformed. Since then, this area has attracted a very rich biodiversity. The Brussels-Capital Region has decided to acquire the site in order to create an ambitious project involving the maintenance of the marsh, the development of a green space, and the creation of subsidized housing. In the course of March, Brussels Environment will work on cleaning the site, enhancing the marsh, and trying to better understand the interactions between the body of water and the groundwater table. Temporary arrangements will also be made with the municipality of Forest and the residents and associations of the neighborhood. These temporary uses will allow enjoyment of the site while waiting for a redevelopment project.
