One day after the German troops invaded Belgium, the railway station of Aarschot was bombed by the Germans on 11 May 1940. Fearing more air raids, most of the citizens of Aarschot left the city. And with good reason, because the next day, on Pentecost Sunday, the German dive bombers reappeared and bombarded several districts of the city. The Schaluin and the Gasthuisstraat were hit hard. The farm of the hospital was completely destroyed and the hospital itself was badly damaged. In the Sint-Jozefscollege, 1200 windows were broken. In the Damian asylum, the neo-Gothic chapel took a direct hit and would have to be demolished. In the photo we see two German army trucks and the arrow points to the Zonneklaar laundry.
