On 9 May 1944, the 's Hertogenmolens were hit. Two fleeing people were killed on the wooden bridge in front of the mills. The house became uninhabitable. The last large vertical water wheel was destroyed. And a bomb hit in the foundations of the west façade was probably the cause of its collapse in 1986.
During the war, many people from the surrounding area came to the mill to have their grain ground at night in black. In the morning between half past seven and seven the people came for their flour. Mayor Ver Elst knew that. But according to Le Clerf's wife, he was a good man: "He said: "I close my eyes, people can bring those klatskes and come and get them. I know they don't have enough to eat."
