The first Allied troops entered our country from France on 2 September 1944. As early as Tuesday 5 September, the British tanks of the No 4 Company and the No 1 Squadron of the Grenadier Guards would capture the Demer bridges in Aarschot. The Germans had withdrawn from the town of Aarschot in the previous days. In their wake followed the hated collaborators. The resistance movements worked together to make life as difficult as possible for the occupying forces in those last days and to maintain order after the liberation. The rejoicing of the people was therefore exuberant when the first tanks of the Tommies drove into the city centre along the Chaussée de Louvain.
