At the beginning of the Second World War, Aarschot was an interesting strategic point as the headquarters of the Second Belgian Army Corps and especially as an important railway junction. Just one day after the German invasion of Belgium, on Saturday 11 May, German planes bombed the railway installations. In the morning, 'the studio' on the Chaussée de Louvain was the target and in the afternoon the station quarter was badly hit. The next morning, around 4:30 a.m., the SNCB management gave the order to set fire to the railway station and sabotage the installations. That morning the German dive bombers also returned and by noon only a burnt pile of rubble remained of the station building.
