"On Sundays in Laeken you can still get off the Sint-Annadreef from the Onze-Lieve-Vrouwekerk to the Sint-Annabron with the chapel of the same name. The wide streets at the intersection suggest that it is busy here during the week, but on Sunday you can still hear the water splashing. It is one of the most beneficial sounds for a human ear, it seems. If we descend into the stone container, which Archduchess Isabella (1566-1633) had built, you can see five tubes in addition to the sky that throw beautiful round jets of water.
The spring was still called sente marien in 1360, other names were the Welleborre and the Five Wound Box, referring to the five wounds of Christ, which became 'five dogs'. In Folktales from North-West Brussels, Van Nieuwenhuysen tells about the legend of the five dog bowls, about a blind boy who went begging every day between Laeken and Grimbergen and how five dogs pounced on the thieves who targeted his money exchange. Since then, a spring would spring with water that was beneficial to the eyes, although fever sufferers also sought cooling there. (...) Laeken author Arthur Cosyn writes in 1904 that strongly unbelieving Lakers no longer believe in the power of the St. Anne's Spring. And also that there is still silence here and the smell of the past. It's no different 110 years later, on a Sunday." (Source: BRUZZ, An Devroe, 06/08/2014)
