The current fairly recent castle has a beautiful park and ramparts. An access lane leads to the village, but the village itself is no longer in touch with the castle park due to the construction of the E17. The history of the castle dates back to 1345. Then the castle was ceded by Wouter van Zwijnaarde to St. Peter's Abbey. Since 1420, protocol stipulated that this castle should be the residence of the Counts of Flanders the night before they received the investiture in St. Peter's Abbey and made their joyful entry into Ghent. It was the temporary residence of Isabella of Austria, sister of Charles V and wife of Christian II, King of Denmark. She died here in 1526. It was destroyed during the iconoclasm and then restored in the 17th century under abbot Joachim Arsenius Schayck. In 1797 it was sold by public auction by the French together with all the confiscated goods of St. Peter's Abbey. Since the first half of the 19th century, it has been owned by the della Faille d'Huysse family. It was rebuilt in the first half of the 19th century on the old fortifications surrounded by water and then acquired its neo-classical style. It was also destroyed in World War I and rebuilt in 1922 in neo-rococo style.
