The place name Brussels comes from Bruocsella in Frankish 'bruoc' + 'sella', which evolved into Broekzele, which means 'settlement (zele) near the marsh (broek)'. There is not much left of this ‘marsh' today. That is why the decision of the Brussels Region in 1984 to protect this area of high biodiversity and to turn it into a nature reserve in 1994 was very much appreciated. Since 1998, the nature reserve has even been recognised as a Natura 2000 protection area.
