The Vuilbeek source is one of the 5 permanent sources in the Sonian Forest (in the territory of Brussels) and is one of the forest springs that form the Woluwe. These springs and the spring water at the bottom of the valleys in the Sonian Forest are the result of the groundwater level that lies just below the surface in that location in the Sonian Forest. The groundwater layer is fed by rainwater and is located in a layer of permeable Brussels sand, which in turn lies on a layer of impermeable Ieperian clay. The sand in the subsoil of the forest is actually visible in the bed of the creek.
Upstream, the creek bed (the Vuilbeek) is largely dry. Have the springs from which the water once dug this long ditch dried up?
