Domaine Merodebos At the end of the eighteenth century, the area of the forests of Merode was mainly characterized by heaths and impassable marshes. Around 1800, mainly coniferous forests were planted, with pine wood to be used as stump wood for the mining industry. The de Merode family owned this area for more than 100 years. Since 1992, the Merode forests have been owned by the Flemish Region, which has saved them from the hands of real estate developers. It is now a beautiful hiking area.
