Yes, some street art doesn’t require any paint at all. The French street artist Invader was one of the first artists to branch out. His mosaics became his trade mark. Nowadays you can find them around the world, often in unexpected places and at great heights. Check his website to see where the Invaders pop up. You’ll also run into a Space Invader in Antwerp’s main square.

Who is Invader?

Invader was inspired to create his Space Invaders by Tomohiro Nishikado’s video game from 1978. His other creations also refer to arcade games. His story is a little mysterious because he prefers to remain anonymous. Invader appeared in Exit Through the Gift Shop, a film by that other anonymous street artist Banksy.

The Invader returned

The Space Invader in Antwerp’s Grote Markt was briefly threatened with eviction. The work disappeared soon after the renovation of the tourist office – the building where you’ll find the Invader. It has since returned. Nobody knows who took care of this. Tipoffs more than welcome.
