Antwerp Baroque by Rise One

A photogenic baroque mural

Street art can be extremely baroque, as Rise One proves with this monumental tribute to his city. It was his dream to create this work, having trained as a graphic artist and having a passion for calligraphy. But the city is also very happy with this impressive calling card and reference to Antwerp as a baroque city. As you can tell from the many tourists that stop in their tracks to take a photo here, it’s also the kind of mural that catches your eye.

Find the name

You may be surprised to hear that Rise One started working from a small sketch, when you see the gigantic dimensions of this mural. He spent two weeks working in all-weather condition on a cherry picker, until he had painted all the letters which he had been thinking about for such a long time. He hid his name in one of the letters. Can you spot the naughty reference to the artist himself?  

The Bible as inspiration

Rise One was inspired by bibles and other baroque books for the design of the letters. He spent a lot of time doing research in Museum Plantin-Moretus. Antwerp Baroque 2018 was the perfect opportunity for this idea, which he had been mulling over for such a long time. He invited three artists to give walls in the city centre a contemporary baroque make-over for the baroque year. Their works are included in this tour.

Rise One adds some colour to the city

Rise One is one of the leading artists on Antwerp’s street art scene. Although his roots are in graffiti, he now creates monumental murals that pop up around the city. He is also the organiser of the Antwerp edition of Meeting of Styles, the leading international street art event.
