Tourist LeMC makes the neighbourhood look even better

The Antwerp hip-hop artist and vocalist Tourist LeMC grew up in Antwerp’s Seefhoek neighbourhood, near the Permeke Library. He wanted to do something nice for his neighbourhood when he launched this third album “We Begrijpen Mekaar” (We understand each other). He opted for a mural, by SMOK. After taking a break of several years, SMOK is working as a street artist again, becoming an international success in a very short time with his murals.

The graffiti artist is a hip-hop artist

It’s not a coincidence that Tourist LeMC chose a mural to announce the release of his new album. Hip-hop and graffiti are traditionally linked. Hip-hop artists used to assume various roles, from DJ, to rapper, breakdancer and/or graffiti artist. American graffiti crossed the ocean, on album covers and in song lyrics. The movie “Style Wars” (1983) zoomed in on graffiti as part of hip-hop culture. Nowadays graffiti and hip-hop are no longer inextricably linked. Some street artists hardly ever listen to hip-hop.
