On a sign above no. 60 you can read ‘Dieu est amour’ (‘God is love’). This street is notable for the presence of several Pentecostal churches. They are mainly attended by believers from Latin America and sub-Saharan Africa. Pentecostalism is a fast-growing evangelical movement within Christianity in which conversion and a fairly literal interpretation of the Bible are central. Faith is professed enthusiastically, with music and stirring sermons, and congregation members are encouraged to make generous donations. The churches also form a network of mutual support for newcomers.
Cantillon (no. 56) is the last Brussels brewery where the local Lambic beer is aged and mixed to make Geuze or Kriek. The family brewery also has a small museum about the brewing process.
Right opposite Cantillon is a new apartment block. It was built for Citydev, the Brussels Region’s property developer which markets homes for middle-income buyers. The Region has been pursuing this policy for more than 30 years to restore social diversity to neighbourhoods with a lack of quality housing.
