This Mediterranean-looking new building from 2015 offers better accommodation mainly for fish and meat traders. It is also hoped that new customers with money to spend will be attracted. Vegetables and fruit are grown and fish are raised on the roof. Right next to Foodmet is the home of non-profit organisation Cultureghem, founded by the owners of the Abattoir site to give it a socio-cultural dimension. In view of the limited play space in this underprivileged area, it organises workshops and children’s activities in the old covered livestock hall (see below). It has also launched ‘Kookmet’, in which participants first do their own shopping at the market and then use it to prepare sustainable and healthy meals in a mobile kitchen. Another initiative is ‘Collectmet’, in which volunteers collect leftover food from the market and use it to make up food packages for people in need.
