With its 25 hectares (2020), the Demerbeemden is the largest reserve project of Natuurpunt Begijnendijk and is said to be the last piece of real open space in the village. The nature reserve is currently a mosaic of separate plots, but the aim is to be able to manage more than 130 ha as one nature reserve. In the valley area between Demer and Grote Laak, forests, bushes, hay meadows and reeds alternate and the nearby water is an interesting biotope for water birds. The area is ideal for various birds of prey.
