In these regions, a laak is a branch that temporarily relieves the Demer to rejoin the river further downstream. The Grote Laakbeek runs between Aarschot and Ninde (Tremelo) and used to be known as Meetshovense Laak. About 10,000 years ago, the Laak was the most important course of the Demer in what is now the Laak Valley. Over time, the Demer has moved more to the south. The Grote Laak continued to exist for a long time as a secondary course of the Demer. But due to the straightening and raising of the dike of the Demer near Aarschot in the early 1970s, the Grote Laakbeek lost its natural water supply. Now the stream is only fed by waste and rainwater. Nature organisations are working to restore the connection with the Demer, so that the Grote Laakbeek becomes water-bearing again and therefore attractive.
