The statue of the Ghent warrior Valeir in the garden in front of the town hall commemorates the Battle of Gavere in 1453. In 1540, Emperor Charles elevated Gavere to a principality, but Prince Lamoraal of Egmont was beheaded by Alva. A plaque on the facade of the Town Hall reminds us of this. Together with the Prinsenmolen, it is the only souvenir of the principality.
The French King Louis XIV had the castle destroyed in 1658. During the straightening of the Scheldt in 1970, some fragments of it were found. They are directly opposite De Poort, on the blind parcel wall. The typically 'crooked' market of Gavere belongs to the steep banks of the Scheldt and dates as a market event from the 15th century. A fire destroyed the Market under Austrian rule in the 18th century. Subsequently, a Fountain monument for water supply was built in the lower market, derived from the nearby Saint Amand spring.
De Poort is the coach house of the former du Sartel manor, which was destroyed in the heavy shelling of Semmerzake and Gavere in WWI. (Battle of the Grenadiers).
