Description

The name of the busy Quai de Willebroek in front of you refers to its origin: it was a mooring place on the old Brussels-Willebroek Canal. To the left of the park was Gare de Bruxelles-Allée Verte railway station, from where the first three passenger trains in continental Europe departed in 1835. In 1846, the Gare du Nord on Place Rogier largely took over the role of a passenger station. Allée Verte continued mainly as a freight station until 1954, when it was demolished for the construction of a heliport for Expo 58.

Parc Maximilien (9.5 ha) with its educational farm, primary school and four social apartment blocks today forms an unstructured and unattractive complex. From 2023, the entire area will be redesigned and renamed ‘Max-sur-Senne’. The Senne will once again flow above ground over a distance of some 700 metres, with a cycle path alongside. There will also be a public canteen on a new neighbourhood square, with extra greenery and sports facilities.
