This is where the Manhattan Plan’s demolition rampage ran out of steam in the mid-1970s. The cellars and foundations of the demolished houses are still there under the ground. Neighbourhood action committees, politicians and property developers battled over the fate of this huge derelict area of land for decades. It was not until 2005 that it was finally decided to turn it into a mixed, largely car-free district. Homes were renovated or added along the east side of the park and several small-scale office projects were constructed. To the west you will see low apartment buildings – no more high-rise blocks! Zenith Tower with its white box on top is the final element on the southern side.
Intensive use is made of the park, whose undulating mounds provide variety, fun and a certain intimacy. The greenery brings a calmer atmosphere to a concrete environment. There are separate play areas for children of different ages and wooden benches for parents and grandparents. Youngsters can enjoy themselves on the skate track and the sports area.
