The Gaucheret Park was built on top of a former block of houses that was demolished at the end of the 1960s as part of the Manhattan Plan. Underground, the cellars and foundations of the demolished houses still remain. Neighborhood action committees, politicians, and real estate groups fought for decades over the future of this large, vacant lot. It wasn’t until 2005 that it was ultimately decided to create a mixed-use neighborhood here. On the left, along the Gaucheretstraat, homes were renovated or new ones were built, and some small-scale office projects were introduced. Across the street, you see low apartment buildings with social and middle-class housing. No more high, isolated blocks! The park is intensively used. The rolling hills provide variety, playful fun, and a certain intimacy. The greenery brings calm to a concrete environment. There are separate play zones for children of different ages and wooden benches for parents and grandparents. Young people can enjoy themselves on the skate park and the sports area. The Zenith Tower with its white box on top forms the closing piece on the south side of the park.
→ Follow the tree path further to the left exit of the park at Gaucheretstraat and continue along it until the intersection with Solvayplein. Cross over and walk left, until you reach the wide staircase to the North Station.
