We are in the southern part of the canal, also known as ‘Port Sud’. The Biestebroeck Quay borders the basin of the same name just behind the now abandoned bridge linking the Cureghem district with the rest of Anderlecht. For decades, the site was used to load and unload coal and materials for industry and for the construction of the city. Near the railway line there was a first-class multi-modal industrial site, which owed its success to the widening of the basin, which allowed for barges to rotate more easily. The districts around the basin in this formerly thriving industrial area have been included in a development strategy. The aim is to redeploy residential and industrial sites through innovative mixed-use real-estate projects. The site is therefore bound to undergo profound changes, which depend largely on the decisions of private developers, who aim to transform the area with a variety of ambitious projects.
