From this point, you step into the footsteps of the very first Sint-Verhaegen from 1888. According to a report from the then magazine 'L’Etudiant', around 200 students gathered here in the Treurenbergstraat in the morning at the estaminet 'La Porte Verte', from where they departed towards the university buildings in the Stuiverstraat. After the festivities, they would meet again at Mr. Brasseels' establishment, where they sang, drank, and especially ate. From then on, the students would always show their most gourmet side at St-V.
The student tradition is inextricably linked to Sint-Verhaegen for many, as after a night of partying, a hearty hunger is inevitable. Starting from the interwar period, the tradition arose to trek from the city center all the way to Ter Kamerenbos in the early hours, where one would indulge in a hearty bowl of onion soup at the brasserie 'Chez Moeder Lambic'. This dish became a staple at St-V, even though from the 1950s onwards, the entire city was no longer traversed at night. The onion soup continued to flow abundantly until the early 1990s on November 20, although over time the students developed a broader appetite. Various establishments advertised around St-V in student magazines to attract hungry stomachs and thirsty throats.
In recent decades, most students retreat after the parade primarily to the cafés and restaurants around the Beurs, or they go to Ixelles to boost the turnover of the hospitality industry there. For those who still find that not enough, there is also an annual 'Post St-V-TD' in the 'Jefke' hall.
