The famous Schreiboomstraat was once the site of the famous Schreiboom. But that is now gone. Philip van Artevelde, son of the famous Jacob van Artvelde who stands on the Vrijdagsmarkt in Ghent, is said to have been hung from that tree. And that after he lost the battle of Westrozebeek in 1382 to Louis of Male with the help of the French army. He would have been heard "crying" in the distance. But whether that is true is highly doubted. There are also alternative versions of how Philip van Arteveld met his end. From breaking the wheel, to being skewered on a fork, to (less spectacularly) succumbing to his injuries in an inn.
