This square was named after the founder of the city, Saint Remacle.
The square has been classified as a historical heritage site. The streets are paved with smooth cobblestones from the Amblève. Most of the houses date from the 18th and 19th centuries. In the middle of the square is "la fontaine du perron" from 1769.
This former marketplace measures 45 by 80 meters, or 3300 square meters.
In 1689 there was a heavy fire and the troops of Louis XIV destroyed most of the houses.
The square is the arrival for "the laetare of Stavelot", the carnival of the city. The Lætare is a traditional festival held during the Laetare festival on the fourth Sunday of Lent. This festival, one of the most popular in Wallonia, is also known for its protagonists: the Blancs Moussis
Saint Remacle was born about 600 and died about 669, and was a Catholic and Orthodox saint, founder of the Abbey of Stavelot in 651 and first abbot of the Abbey of Solignac.
