West of Place Saint-Remacle, take a minute or two to stroll through the oldest part of Stavelot.
These are the cobbled Place du Vinâve and the small streets of La Fontaine and Delbrouck, which can only be explored on foot.
You will take the oldest alleys of the city, lined with houses in the typical Stavelot style, with facades covered with slate tiles.
Penultimate Abbot of Stavelot-Malmedy from 1766 to 1786, Jacques de Hubin was the sponsor of several monuments erected in the two capitals of his principality. In Stavelot, the most symbolic remains the fountain-platform of the place Saint-Remacle. Several other fountains have also been preserved. The prince, whose motto was Fluvius Pacis (river of peace), has donated several water-related monuments to both Stavelot and Malmedy. This fountain, installed on the corner of rue du Vinâve, is part of the plot donated in 1777, as evidenced by the date engraved on the central pillar of the monument. This is topped by a carved fence and bordered on either side by two limestone basins into which the water flows and composed by a slate slab. On this pillar you see a beautiful wooden door that gives access to the spring mechanism. The other fountains are in rue de la Fontaine and rue du Bac. At the time of their inauguration and until the 20th century, they served as public washrooms, at a time when running water and washing machines did not yet exist.
Classification as a monument on September 6, 1989
